Getting Ready for Deployment TipsSOME EMERGENCY MESSAGES DO NOT HAVE TO BE SENT IF YOU HAVE GATHERED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE THE SERVICE MEMBER LEAVES Most of this information is recommended or required by the military and the Unit will give you the details on how to obtain it. Ø Obtain a copy of the service member’s military ID Ø Obtain a copy of the service member’s orders and travel itinerary Ø Obtain a power of attorney and record it at courthouse Ø Obtain pre-authorization for applying for financial aid to military aid societies Ø Know the names and ranks of chain of command Ø Create alternative child/elder care plan Ø Obtain a medical treatment consent form so that if the caregiver cannot give consent, the alternative caregiver can. Ø Apply for a passport. Ø Make sure will is updated and know where a copy is placed. Ø Discuss when bills are due and where records and receipts are kept. Ø Know contact information for the Family Readiness Group. Family Readiness Group for Company B, 113th Maintenance Battalion Ø If there are marital issues, seek counseling before departure. Ø Discuss family finances and set up how money is to be handled. A separate bank account for the service member is handy so that two people are not writing checks on same account. Ø Know where to shut off water, gas, and electric. Ø Know who to call for repairs for car, home, etc.Have extra sets of keys (sometimes the service member will deploy with the only set!
