TEENA LIGMAN
The Red Cross was always a familiar force for good in my life everything from the people who taught me how to swim as a little girl to the stories about Clara Barton and how she helped soldiers in the war. When I went to college I started giving blood and became familiar with the Red Cross blood drives. I joined the Army in 1973 and learned how important a role the Red Cross plays in getting emergency messages to soldiers. When I went through special training for going into Bosnia- there were Red Cross volunteers training along with the soldiers in order to go into the war zone. I was impressed with their dedication. In 1990 my house was hit by the June 2nd tornado. We live in the country at the end of a long driveway, and nobody had been back to check on us- until Joe Henley with the Red Cross pulls up the next day with food, water, and just to see if we were okay. So when someone asked me a couple years later if I wanted to volunteer, I was happy to sign up as a volunteer with the Support to Armed Forces program. Later I was asked to serve on the board of directors, and in 2009 I agree to chair the board. There are few organizations that touch as many lives around the world or in as many facets as the American Red Cross. It's an honor to serve with the Red Cross and be part of the greatest humanitarian organization in the world. |
